Congratulations on the birth of your new son! We are happy that you have chosen us to perform his circumcision. This involves removal of the excess foreskin of the penis.
A special plastic ring (called a PlastiBell®) is used to safely perform this procedure. Your baby will have this plastic ring placed at the end of his penis and will go home with the ring still in place. This will not require removal. It will fall off within 5 to 8 days after the circumcision.
The care of the circumcision is really quite simple and requires very little attention. No special dressing is required. The baby can be bathed and diapered just as if he had not been circumcised. If the penis becomes heavily soiled with stool, gently cleanse with diaper wipes or soap and water. You may use an antibiotic ointment, if the penis tends to stick to the diaper.
Please NOTE: A dark brown or black ring encircling the plastic ring is perfectly natural. This will disappear when the plastic ring falls off.
If the plastic ring has not fallen off within 8 days, or if the ring has slipped onto the shaft of the penis, you should call the office immediately.
The risks of this procedure may include bleeding and infection but both are extremely rare. Please call the office immediately if there is significant bleeding under the skin causing a large amount of swelling. If the bleeding is external, mild pressure on the bleeding point for 10 to 15 minutes usually stops the bleeding. A small amount of blood on the diaper after the procedure is expected. If you notice any redness, discharge, or fever greater than 101 degrees, please call the office immediately.
The baby may return to his normal diet immediately after the circumcision.
A follow-up appointment is usually not necessary unless specific problems or questions arise.
